HOW DOES SURFING INFLUENCE YOUR PROJECTS?
Surfing touched my soul many, many years ago and has never left. Sliding on waves, feeling the sun and sea, the smell of wax and wetsuits. The sound of waves and seabirds and laughing stoke all have a nostalgia to me. They sing and I dance. Being able to formulate what I see in surf culture into an art is what it’s all about for me. The colours, bright and beautiful but also sometimes mute and calm all reflect what the sea and nature provides through surfing. Just the act of surfing produces feelings of calm and stoke that are hard to describe unless experienced. Those experiences and memories and visions are what inspire my work.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ERICEIRA COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS?
Magic Quiver has positioned itself in a beautiful little surf community. Surrounding themselves with great shapers and creative folk easily spill over into a day to day life that I soon became enchanted with. Magic Quiver has just that, a magic quiver of surfboards. I rode many of them, all shapes and sizes and colours. I met amazing folk up and down the coast, in the villages and surrounding Lisbon art galleries. All these vibes played their part. Magic Quiver had a very focused mindset on what they wanted, which was a laid back muted feel of artwork. All those things combined allowed a few pieces of artwork to materialize.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT COLLABORATING WITH MAGIC QUIVER...
When I was first contacted by Magic Quiver to create some art I was stoked. Magic Quiver is just one of those surf companies that get the whole surf vibe for me. From their choice of surf products and brands they sell, to their joy of travel and adventure and down to earth good vibes of family, friends an supporting the local community. I initially came to Ericeira for a research trip. It was my first trip to Portugal and I was excited to learn and experience it. Ericeira is at first a small fishing village, which has a lot of history in creative cultures but it is also a thriving surf community and a place for many creative folk to expand their ventures. I was warmly welcomed by the Magic Quiver team. All super humans and warm people. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with the people and place. I experienced the coastal winds, the bright warm sun and glistening seas and waves. I spent time walking the streets and taking photos of old buildings and their faded colours. I spent a lot of time surfing and feeling the pulse of the Portuguese surf, riding a quiver of retro inspired surfboards. I met amazing people who always were kind and friendly to me and all that vibe helped to inspire some funky little artworks. Working closely with what Magic Quiver had in mind has been an epic journey of collaboration.
